Diffusion is the movement of materials from an area of high concentration to an area of low concentration through a selectively permeable membrane. When a cell has a higher concentration of a material than its surroundings, it will lose some of that material. However, when a cell has a lower concentration of a material than its surroundings, it will take that material in.
